Forgetting Things Over Time III, 2023
Paper and glue, 7 x 9.5 in.

Trevor Sloan’s collages blend organic forms with surreal juxtapositions, creating dreamlike compositions that radiate mystery. His manipulation of natural textures obscures familiar figures, prompting a deeper exploration of space and reality. Viewing his work evokes a sensation akin to synesthesia, as if each piece is paired with an imagined cinematic soundtrack of vintage synths and soft, rhythmic drumming. The experience is immersive, drawing the viewer into an atmospheric world where visual elements pulse with auditory echoes of the past—or perhaps we’ve simply listened to his new album on repeat one too many times.

Let it Flow, 2023
Paper and glue, 9 x 11 in.

I make analog collages using vintage magazines and books (mostly from the 50s–70s). I feel a great sense of freedom with collaging in that I can experiment with different styles. Trying to balance the natural and the abstract, I think of my collages as magic paths, revealing symbols of things forgotten or fragmented memories. If there are faces peering out, they are benevolent ghosts of time.

Elementary Flashback, 2024
Paper and glue, 8 x 11 in.

I'm always keeping an eye out for new materials. Some of my best scores were found left out on the curb. I like to work with art books, graph paper and vintage magazines (like National Geographic, Life and Scientific American).

Natural Gentleman, 2023
Paper and glue, 8.5 x 11 in.

Past Life Expression II, 2022
Paper and glue, 9 x 11 in.

I think collage is for everyone. Grab some scissors, cut up some stuff and glue it together. I also write poems and songs, but collage allows me to express myself in a new way because I'm working with pieces of photographs or paintings from different people and decades.

Past Life Expression III, 2022
Paper and glue, 9 x 11 in.

Living Room Dream, 2023
Paper and glue, 5.5 x 8.5 in.

Trevor Sloan is a songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and collage artist from Toronto. Described as having a "breezy, mystical sound," his music infuses intimate vocals with acoustic instruments and old synths. Thoughtful with touches of melancholy, the new album A Room by the Green Sea finds Trevor mixing ethereal indie-folk, pop and mood music; at times, the result is lush and cinematic, at other times it is stripped-down and quiet.

Since the early 2010s, Trevor has been writing and recording, inspired by singer-songwriters of the 60s and 70s and countless contemporary artists. He has released five albums under his own name (previous music was released under the moniker Phono d'enfant). His albums have received press coverage from CBC, Atwood Magazine, Psychedelic Baby Magazine, Also Cool and Cups N Cakes.

Ray Johnson and the Last Dance of the Taoist Collages

After Chicago-area choreographer Sybil Shearer died in 2005, a box with unexpected contents was discovered tucked away in her attic. It was filled with artworks—what the artist Ray Johnson called his Taoist Collages—that he had mailed to her 50 years earlier. These collages were not simply a stand-alone mailing between two friends, but rather the precursors to Johnson’s mail art practice.
